About PRC

Support – Strengthen
Empower – Educate

Our History

The Parenting Resource Center (PRC) in Austin, Minnesota, was founded with a mission to support and strengthen families, providing resources and programs that empower parents and caregivers. PRC began in 1977 as a small initiative to address the growing need for family support services in Mower County.

Initially, the organization focused on providing parenting education and basic resources for families in need. Over the years, PRC expanded its reach and programming, adapting to the changing needs of the community. Key milestones include the establishment of the Welcome Center, a hub for connecting individuals and families with vital resources, and the creation of the Family Support Services program, which provides essentials like diapers, clothing, and a basic needs pantry.

The organization also became a trusted partner in family-focused education, launching initiatives like the Parent Enrichment Program and offering Supervised Visitation and Exchanges to ensure safe and supportive environments for children and parents navigating challenging circumstances.

In addition to direct services, PRC has fostered strong community collaborations, working with local organizations, businesses, and government entities to enhance family well-being. Notable partnerships include those with the Zonta Club of Austin, Hormel Foods, The Hormel Foundation, United Way of Mower County and local churches.

PRC’s commitment to its mission has also led to innovative programming, such as the Helping Homes initiative, which aims to provide childcare solutions for families. The Austin Positive Action Coalition (APAC) and Students Taking A New Direction (STAND) programs reflect PRC’s dedication to engaging youth in building healthier communities.

In 2023, PRC relocated to the newly constructed Community Action Building (CAB), located at 105 1st St SE, Austin, MN. CAB brings together several nonprofits and service organizations under one roof, making it easier for community members to access a wide range of support in a single, central location. This collaborative space was designed to simplify the process of finding help by creating a shared hub for essential services. The vision for the CAB began in June 2021 and came to life thanks to the generous support of The Hormel Foundation and Austin HRA. While construction was mostly completed in late 2022, supply chain delays extended the final move-in to 2023. We’re proud to be part of this innovative project that strengthens collaboration and improves access for the families we serve.

Today, the Parenting Resource Center stands as a cornerstone of support in Austin, MN, continually evolving to meet the needs of families and ensuring a brighter future for the community.
