You can also drop off donations at the following locations in August: St. John’s Lutheran Church will be doing a Pantry Drive; Austin Congregational Church will be doing a Diaper Drive. We are in need of clothing for our Clothes Closet as well. We accept sizes 3T-Youth XL. All items MUST BE laundered before donating. We will also accept NEW packages of under garments and socks. Donations can be dropped off at the CAB Building.

WELCOME CENTER
As summer winds down, our thoughts turn to crisp autumn days and the start of a new school year. We’re excited to share that, through the PRC’s Family Support Program, we’ll be providing School Supply Kits to help students in Mower County start the year off right.
The Welcome Center Team is here to support families who may benefit from this program. To sign up, please call us at 507-437-8330 or 507-434-2863.
On July 12, the Welcome Center was honored to co-host a celebration of South Sudan’s Independence Day (officially July 9) with South Sudan Women and Children’s Global Outreach. The event was a meaningful afternoon of connection with South Sudanese leaders, community members, and local government and civic leaders. It served as a powerful reminder that, for many, freedom comes at a great cost—and that safety and opportunity often require building a new life far from home.
We are proud to be a resource for newcomers seeking refuge and opportunity as they settle in the United States. We know that feeling a sense of belonging is vital when moving to a new community, and the Welcome Center is honored to be part of a city that understands and values the contributions immigrants bring to our local landscape.
Looking ahead, the City of Austin will be celebrating Welcoming Week, a global initiative rooted in the belief that we all thrive when everyone feels a sense of belonging. We’ve been working closely with community partners to plan a meaningful week of events.
Join us:
September 12 at the Cedar River Farmers Market to kick off Welcoming Week.
September 17 for “The Inviting Table” at the Community Action Building as we celebrate 25 Years of Stories and Service with Apex Austin.
PREVENTION
APAC
In July, the Austin Positive Action Coalition (APAC) helped the community celebrate summer by providing yard games for Southgate Elementary’s Summer School Celebration and at the community block party hosted by the Parenting Resource Center. At APAC’s monthly meeting, Allison J. Scott, the Community Health Educator and Public Information Officer (PIO) with Mower County Health and Human Services, who spoke and answered questions about her work in the community.
The next APAC meeting is scheduled for August 27th from 12 – 1 p.m. at the Community Action Building in Austin. There is also an online option available for those unable to attend in-person. We look forward to continuing our important discussions and initiatives to improve and strengthen prevention efforts within the community.
STAND
Our youth coalition members performed outreach and prevention education during the community block party and provided free face painting for children and their families to help celebrate! Also, STAND students (including a new member!) participated in an afternoon canoe excursion at the Jay C. Hormel Nature Center. A big thank you to the APAC volunteers who made it a safe and fun experience.
If you’re interested in learning more or becoming a member of APAC or STAND, please reach out to us at dfc@prc-austinmn.org.
