MAY 2026

PRC PATHWAYS

Your monthly guide to Family Support, Community Resources, and Positive Action!

As we step into May, we’re excited to share the meaningful work and moments shaping our community. This edition features recent highlights, important updates, and ways you can stay engaged with PRC. We’re grateful to have you alongside us—your support helps strengthen and uplift the families we serve every day.

OUR CORE PILLARS

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES

Our Family Services Coordinator recently participated in the Discover Science Together event at the Hormel Institute. The kids were thrilled to take on the challenge of building a tower of books supported by rolled‑paper pillars. Their faces lit up as the stack grew taller than they were—some even had to stand on their tiptoes to place the final book.

Another favorite activity was Sink or Float. Each child chose an object and predicted whether it would sink or float. Parents joined in, and it was especially fun when the kids’ predictions were right and the parents’ weren’t. One of the trickiest surprises was learning that a can of Diet Coke floats while regular Coke sinks because the 39 grams of sugar in regular Coke makes it heavier.

I was genuinely impressed by the parents who brought their children to this event. Simply showing up, engaging in the activities, and learning alongside their kids sends a powerful message about curiosity, learning, and spending meaningful time together.

This activity also gave us an opportunity to promote the programs we offer and the Summer Fun in the Park series that will be starting on June 8th.  Family Services will be offering a Parent/Child activity on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. in four different parks.  They will be able to play some games, do some crafts, read books and do some STEM activities.

Our Family Services Coordinator will be working at the Reading Cafe in the month of June from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  This coincides with free lunch at Woodson schools and allows kids to get lunch and participate in some activities.

Let’s talk about free play!

Free play outdoors is more than just a way to pass the time with kids — it’s one of the most powerful tools parents have for supporting healthy development. When children are given room to explore, imagine, and take the lead, they build skills that structured activities simply can’t replicate.

Why Free Play Matters

At its core, free play gives kids ownership of their experience. Instead of following adult‑designed rules, they experiment, negotiate, and invent. That freedom strengthens creativity, problem‑solving, and confidence. Outdoors, the benefits multiply: uneven ground challenges balance, natural materials spark curiosity, and open space encourages movement that supports physical development.

The Parent’s Role

Parents don’t need to orchestrate the perfect activity. In fact, the magic happens when adults step back just enough. Being present — but not directing — shows kids that their ideas matter. It also creates opportunities for connection: a shared laugh when a pinecone becomes a “treasure,” or a moment of teamwork when building a fort from sticks.

What Kids Gain

  • Independence as they make choices and test boundaries

  • Resilience from trying, failing, and trying again

  • Social skills through collaboration and negotiation

  • A sense of wonder that comes from discovering the world firsthand

Free play outdoors isn’t just fun — it’s foundational. When parents join in with openness and curiosity, they’re not only making memories; they’re helping their children grow into confident, capable humans.

SEIBEL CENTER

This past month at the Seibel Center, we’ve been focusing on building stronger connections with our community and expanding awareness of the services we provide.

We’ve had the opportunity to connect with local partners, including hosting visitors who came to tour the center and learn more about how we support families. These conversations help us continue to grow, collaborate, and better meet the needs of those we serve.

As we look ahead, May is Supervised Visitation Month, a time to recognize the importance of safe, supportive environments for families to connect. At the Seibel Center, this work is at the heart of everything we do, and we are proud to be part of a network that prioritizes child safety and family connection.

We’re grateful for the continued support from our community and look forward to what’s ahead!

Please show your support at our next fundraiser! May 6th at the Qdoba in Austin, 4pm-close. Please say our name at checkout!

WELCOME CENTER

May is shaping up to be a vibrant and engaging month at the Parenting Resource Center as we continue building connections and celebrating the diversity of our community. We are especially excited to host our annual Taste of Nations event on May 16 from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Bandshell Community Park. This year’s event brings together local vendors, cultural and community partners for a joyful celebration of culture, connection, and shared experiences. We invite families, neighbors, and community members to join us for this free, family-friendly event and experience the rich traditions that make our community unique.

In addition to Taste of Nations, our team will be out in the community throughout the month conducting SNAP Outreach tabling events. These outreach efforts are an important part of ensuring individuals and families have access to the resources they need. Our staff will be available at various locations across the area to provide information about SNAP benefits and answer questions. These events are designed to meet people where they are making support more accessible and reducing barriers to essential services.

We encourage you to stop by, say hello, and connect with our team whether at Taste of Nations or during one of our outreach events. Together, we’re working to strengthen families, increase access to resources, and build a more connected community.

PREVENTION

The Parenting Resource Center and Recovery Is Happening are proud to partner together in Austin, MN to bring a dedicated women’s recovery meeting to our community. This collaboration was created with the goal of providing a safe, supportive, and empowering space for women navigating all stages of recovery.

Beginning May 13th, this group will be held every Wednesday at 3:30 PM in the Community Action Building. Whether someone is just starting their recovery journey, has been in recovery for years, or is simply seeking connection and support, all women are welcome.

We believe that recovery happens best in community, and we are honored to help create a place where women can come together to grow stronger, find hope, and continue moving forward.

If you or someone you know could benefit from this group, we encourage you to join us or help spread the word.

Executive Director’s Corner

Spring is finally here—and with it comes that sense of starting fresh. After a long winter, there’s something about a little more sunshine and longer days that reminds us we can begin again, too. At PRC, this season has been full of planning, dreaming, and getting ready for what’s ahead. Just like a garden, the work we’ve been doing behind the scenes is all about creating the right conditions for growth—and I’m excited to start sharing that with you. We have some great things coming up. Our PRC Summer Fun Series is a fun way to stay connected, and I’m especially excited about our Financial Literacy classes—because real tools and real knowledge can truly change the trajectory for families. Community doesn’t just happen—it’s built, one relationship at a time. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that connection is at the center of everything we do. At the Parenting Resource Center, we show up for people. Sometimes that looks like a class, sometimes it’s a hard conversation, and sometimes it’s simply sitting with someone and reminding them they’re not alone. No matter the setting, the goal is the same: meet people where they are and walk alongside them. I won’t sugarcoat it—the world seems off kilter right now. But here’s what I’m most proud of: it hasn’t changed how we show up. The heart of this work is still strong. Our team continues to lead with compassion, consistency, and a whole lot of dedication to the families we serve. If you’re looking for ways to plug in, check out our Facebook page for all the details—we’d love to see you there.

Thanks for being part of this community. It really does take all of us.
