Promoting Positivity
About APAC
Our Mission: We will work together to reduce alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use among our peers by empowering and supporting each other to make healthy choices.
Austin Positive Action Coalition, better known as APAC was formed by community members from 12 sectors to work on the reduction of substance use in our youth. Our mission is to promote healthy and positive lifestyles within our communities. The primary goal is to foster a safe and resilient environment for our youth by changing perceptions about ATOD (Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drugs) and aligning prevention resources. The coalition works together to plan and implement activities related to the mission.
The coalition is supported through two grants the Drug Free Community and the BIPOC grant. Each grant focuses on special aspects of the community to support positive messaging to reduce the use of substances in youth.

Drug-Free Communities
The DFC grant is the nation’s leading effort to mobilize communities to prevent and reduce substance use among youth. This grant is awarded to communities to help set the expectation that communities work to find local solutions to local problems in order to prevent or reduce youth substance use. This work is done by establishing and maintaining collaboration through public and private nonprofits agencies and all government to support the efforts of the coalition working to prevent and reduce youth substance use.
BIPOC
The Minnesota Department of Human Services, through its Behavioral Health Division (STATE), seeks proposals from qualified responders to develop and implement substance use disorder (SUD) primary prevention programming for black, indigenous and people of color (BIPOC) communities. Through this grant, successful responders will develop and implement culturally inclusive, primary prevention programming to reduce youth alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana use.
The BIPOC grant was in recent years granted to the Austin community to help spread the work already happening to include the diversity our community has. The focus is to engage all members through an informed and respectful manner.
